Lincoln-Douglas debates

October 7th is the second debate between Barack Obama and John McCain. It's also the 150th anniversary of the fifth debate between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas (link) at Galesburg.

Having just skimmed the text, some things become apparent. One, Douglas was the crowd's favorite. And two, Douglas went on the attack, thus causing Lincoln to defend his positions. A few times when Douglas should have been defending himself, he just laughed it off and the crowd bought it. Though it appears that Douglas is quite condescending and intolerant of Lincoln and his ideas, I doubt he was to the point of clenching his teeth.

All the debates can be read here. Or, you can buy the re-enactments from the C-Span store.
