Pre-election thoughts

This has been going around:

Quick: When was the last time the Republican party won a U.S. presidential race without a Bush or a Nixon on the ticket?

I hope you're sitting down for the answer: 1928. Whoa!

This is scary:

Recently read:

I'm sitting on the edge of my seat between now and the election that nothing happens whereby the whole thing gets called off and George Bush swears himself in for another four years.

I was going to go back to sleep for a while but your last sentence will give me nightmares if I do. Is this possible? I too am on edge now after reading this:

"I'm sitting on the edge of my seat between now and the election that nothing happens whereby the whole thing gets called off and George Bush swears himself in for another four years." -

Marie - are you always so - I can't think of a word - my brain is in panic mode....

bush is nothing to worry about. he doesn't want a third term; i don't think he ever really wanted a first. on 1/20 he'll be like buchanan turning the office over to lincoln - happy to go back home.

I think Bush ends his term as more of a Buchanan-Hoover hybrid. He combines the cynical destructiveness of the former with the economic legacy of the latter. Though it must be said that Hoover, unlike Bush, was a thoroughly competent and decent man whom events ran over; whereas Bush and his cronies are among the principal authors of the current economic chaos.

GWB is a swell guy whose library I can't wait to visit.

And also ... as to the coup scenario ... you know, the guy who might be hard to pry out of the bunker is Cheney. I can easily see him insisting, straight face and all, that there's nothing in the Constitution that requires him to step down. I wonder if the military has a "shock and awe" contingency plan to extract him from his secret underground HQ in the event he puts up a fuss.

(I'm joking. But it would be a swell premise for a thriller TV show a la "Prison Break.")
