Listen, they're playing our song*

Conversation earlier today between someone from the transistor radio age (me) and someone from the post-music video age (person):

Person: It's so annoying these people on YouTube who put photo montages to music.
Me: Uh huh.
Person: It's even more annoying when they put the music over a show.
Me: A show? You mean like MacGyver?
Person: Yeah. They ruin a perfectly good...
Me: Well, you have to remember most music before 1981 didn't have video to go with it.
Person [laughing]: Well, I'm not looking for music before 1981.

Personally, I don't listen to music to see a video. I listen to listen. Okay, sometimes I watch to see if it's a spectacle I might like. For example, I can think of at least one music video from which I absolutely cannot avert my eyes. For the most part, however, the raw unadorned music is best.

Obviously, no one has to have something visual to go along with their music. At least I don't think so. But maybe some people prefer it. Is it a generational thing? I don't know.

Listening to music sometimes conjures up a movie scene for me but rarely a music video. I guess it helps that I haven't seen that many music videos. Chuck Berry's You Never Can Tell will be forever entwined with the Twist dance contest in Pulp Fiction.

Yeah, I have a few like those, too. I never saw Pulp Fiction. I'm not sure why.
