Blagojevich's process

In a November 6, 2008, article on the SJ-R entitled, "Who will replace Obama in the U.S. Senate?" Governor Rod Blagojevich is quoted at a Chicago news conference regarding replacing Barack Obama's in the U.S. Senate:

“The process begins today. The thinking begins today. The search begins today,” Blagojevich said.

In another article on SJ-R on Thanksgiving Day, November, 27, 2008, the AP caught up with Blagojevich at a Chicago homeless shelter. The article doesn't have any direct quotes from Blagojevich. However, he told the AP that Representative Danny Davis would make a great senator. Also:

Blagojevich says he must follow the proper process for choosing someone to serve Obama's remaining years as junior senator. He says he's still on track to appoint a successor by the end of the year.

Both times Blagojevich emphasizes the process. I wondered at the time what he meant by that since the statute doesn't set forth a process. Now we know the process included Blagojevich getting something in exchange for an appointment.

To get a glimpse of what Blagojevich considers the process, check out paragraph 104 of the government's Affidavit attached to the Complaint (PDF):

104. On November 11, 2008, ROD BLAGOJEVICH talked with JOHN HARRIS about the Senate seat. ROD BLAGOJEVICH suggested starting a 501(c)(4) organization (a non-profit organization that may engage in political activity and lobbying) and getting “his (believed to be the President-elect’s) friend Warren Buffett or some of those guys to help us on something like that.” HARRIS asked, “what, for you?” ROD BLAGOJEVICH replied, “yeah.” Later in the conversation, ROD BLAGOJEVICH stated that if he appoints Senate Candidate 4 to the Senate seat and, thereafter, it appears that ROD BLAGOJEVICH might get impeached, he could “count on [Senate Candidate 4], if things got hot, to give [the Senate seat] up and let me parachute over there.” HARRIS said, “you can count on [Senate Candidate 4] to do that.” Later in the conversation, ROD BLAGOJEVICH said he knows that the President-elect wants Senate Candidate 1 for the Senate seat but “they’re not willing to give me anything except appreciation. Fuck them.”

The Complaint contains more indications of Blagojevich's process.

I really hope it isn't Danny Davis (my Congress-critter); his unconscionable support of Rev Sun Moon from a few years ago really irks me.

(unrelated: funny that Feedjit thinks I am in Highland, Indiana. Ha, not in this lifetime…)
