Via Dan, we learn about the Doctrine of Proportionality in relation to the never ending war between Israel and Palestine, which once again, was ratcheted up a gear this weekend.

I'm guessing at the year, but I believe it was sometime in the middle-60s when I heard David Brinkley, in his very distinctive voice say:

Fighting broke out in the Gaza Strip today with the Israelis firing machine guns and the Palestinians throwing rocks and bottles. (Paraphrasing.)

I was probably 9 or 10 at the time and glued to the 6:00 news every night. All these years later, I'm still haunted by the image that report evoked.

By these words, no one should assume which side I'm taking, if any. Just marking a place in time.
