The Needles

Dear Mom: I just left Needles, California and will arrive in San Diego about 9:30. I'll write as soon as I can after I get to San Diego. Hughie.

Postmark: BARSTOW CAL - 1931 DEC 19 - 4:30 PM

I believe Hughie (an older brother of my dad) had just enlisted in the Navy. At age 18, he must have been so excited. From San Diego he would travel the world.

Update: Found a more recent shot from near the same spot: Colorado River and the "Needles." Still the same, except for "several bridges and pipelines that cross the Colorado River at this point."

Another update: Legends of America on Needles, California. "When the Mother Road was completed, thousands dust bowl escapees and tourists journeyed to California, and Needles sprouted all types of services, motels, and cafes, many of which can still be seen today."

Like the postcard better. :)

Postmarked December 19 in Barstow (maybe 140 miles west of Needles). My dad recalls going through the same place on an un-air-conditioned train in July 1930. He remembers the heat as punishing.
