On corporations policing the internet

We've all seen it. A corporation discovers something it perceives to be unfavorable written about it on the Internet. Then, it tries to eradicate the offending words by whatever means are at its disposal. Often, these means include having a lawyer make contact with whoever is in charge of the space where the words are written.

And, then BANG! Instead of the words just quietly being deleted from the Internet, pretty soon everyone is talking about the corporation and said words and it spreads like wildfire.

We may be seeing a little of that effect right here in Central Illinois. On Saturday morning, Peoria Pundit got a visit from a private investigator serving a letter on behalf of a lawyer representing one Globe Energy about a three month old post: I am threatened with a lawsuit. See also: Looking at Globe Energy’s business with taxpapers and F*** ‘em. And, my friend Dan picked up on it out in California: Peoria Story.

Sometimes it's better to let sleeping dogs snore.
