Dan Rostenkowski

Former Congressman from Chicago, Dan Rostenkowski passed away today. He was 82 years old. Think what you want about the man, but he knew and loved politics and he knew and loved Chicago.

Many, many years ago (circa one cold winter night in 1981), I was part of an angry crowd that took our case to our congressman, Dan Rostenkowski, certain that he would take our position and wield his power to make a certain "bad thing" go away. We were granted an audience with him (not just an aide) in his office. And, when we were done presenting the facts of our case, he calmly and diligently and in no uncertain terms took his time explaining how and why we were wrong and he wasn't going to do anything about it. Needless to say, we were quite disappointed we weren't going to see the "bad thing" run out of town on a rail. But, as for me personally, the respect I had for him doubled that night.

Rest in peace, Rosti.

Edit: Corrected his age.
