Lincoln Herndon Law Office

scaffolding-2011-03-26 12.16.03.jpg

Sixth and Adams, Springfield, Illinois.

Before he left for the White House, Abraham Lincoln told his law partner:

"If I live I'm coming back some time, and then we'll go right on practising law as if nothing had ever happened."

It wasn't to be.

Many years ago, I was at my desk at the law office where I worked at the time. The phone rang, and instead of answering it like I usually did, I answered "Lincoln Law Office." I didn't t know where that came from. It was a totally inexplicable utterance, which I immediately caught and corrected. Funny thing, though, the person on the other end of the line was a great-great-great-grandson of one of Lincoln's early law partners calling for my boss. We both freaked out a little together. (I forget the genealogy. There might be a couple more greats in there. Or maybe he's a nephew or cousin or something. In any event, some relation.)
