Photo from back in time, probably somewhere in Wisconsin. That was our boat, which we took everywhere. We loved to fish.

Speaking of fishing, there was a fishing tournament on the Illinois River yesterday and today. But, not just any kind of fishing tournament:

Many tournament participants come dressed for combat, wearing hockey masks, goggles, helmets, and carrying shields (re-purposed trashcan lids are the most common).
Among those at the tournament in Bath Friday were three women from Boston in tiaras, tutus and sashes proclaiming them Carp Queens. A woman from Idaho wore a rubber chicken strapped to the top of her helmet. (Redneck Fishing Tournament fun for all but the carp.)

You've got to see the video in the article to appreciate wearing a helmet to go fishing. Good times.

Update: Tournament pictures. And more.

Love the pic, and the boat.

Awesome tournament. I'm scared to death that those things are going to make it into Lake Michigan and on to all the other Great Lakes. I understand the commercial issues, but I think at some point we will deeply regret not closing off those canals in Chicago.

Thanks, Dave. I believe that was an Alumacraft, which were built to last. It's probably still floating around out there somewhere.

I totally agree about the Great Lakes.

When we were flying across the country the other day, I got a nice view of the Illinois River off in the distance to the south. I did think of John McPhee's great article about the barge operators on the river (which includes a mention of how rich and healthy the river's fishery was before Chicago began sending its effluent west and south), but the carp never crossed my mind
