Sunday odds and ends

washington-park-2011-09-25.jpg

* Photo is from this morning in Washington Park, where you can see the colors are starting to change. This is my favorite weather. Not too hot, not too cold. I just wish it would last longer.

* Everett Dirksen. Mark Kirk, the Moderate Republican U.S. Senator from Illinois tweeted this a few days ago about another Moderate Republican U.S. Senator from Illinois:

Unveiling Everett Dirksen portrait in just a few minutes w/ @RepAaronSchock and @RepSchilling.

Photos of the unveiling are here.

Most people probably remember Senator Dirksen, who served in the U.S. Senate from 1951 to 1969, and the House some years before that, as the one who said "A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you're talking about real money." Here's a two minute clip of him talking about raising your debt ceiling in 1965.

In case you forgot about the Wage Stabilization Board, here's a 15 minute Longines Chronoscope interview of a very candid Senator Dirksen on the topic of labor and limiting the powers of said board in May of 1952. He covers a lot of other topics, sometimes hiding his partisanship, sometimes not, including the Supreme Court, Korea, fake prosperity, the upcoming presidential election, and more.

And, if you just can't get enough of the voice, here's his Grammy Award winning recitation of Gallant Men. On the off chance you don't already have it in your military records collection, you can download it at Amazon for 99 cents.

* Barack Obama, party of one, your table is waiting. (I did not mean that to sound mean, although I'm sure some will take it that way.) I highly recommend reading Rich Miller's latest column, where he departs from the usual Illinois politics, and writes about President Obama: The legislative mindset. This very insightful piece is from someone who knew the President from his days in the Illinois Statehouse. Also, recommend reading the comments, which for the most part, are of a much higher standard than comment sections elsewhere on the Internet.

* Finally, my daughter had one of these in her bathroom tonight:

What is it?

Well, it is not the thing that killed Frosty. I thought that maybe it was a dreaded brown recluse spider, but it looks like it is an eastern parson spider. Not nearly as ooky as spiders go.

That's it. The article mentions the wolf spider, which is what we thought it was at first. Excellent find, Dave. Thank you.
