By day I make the cars

* Early this morning I saw the most heartbreaking sight that I still cannot shake. A pair of mallards were sunning themselves on the grass near a pond. As I approached, they got up and started to walk away. I thought it was so odd because they're usually pretty tame and will often come right up to you to see if you have some bread. So, I immediately stopped and quietly started to backtrack. But, the drake had a terrible injury and could only make it about two steps before he had to stop and sit down. He wasn't up long enough to tell if it was his foot or his leg. Not only could you see the pain on his face, but also the resignation that this was his new lot in life. The hen, who was obviously pregnant, made it about ten steps before she turned and looked over her shoulder to see that her mate wasn't by her side. She came back to tend to him, but not before studying me to make sure I wasn't a threat. It was all so sad.

That breaks my heart, Marie.

Me too, Rob. A week later and I still cannot get him out of my mind. And heart.
