Clouds got in my way

Second Street.

* A panhandler recently approached me. He started to say, "can I..." Usually, they say they just want to ask you a question or tell you a little story, while emphasizing they're not going to ask for money. Before he could go on, I cut him off, saying I didn't have any money. He said, "oh, okay," and just walked on without a glance back. I was so surprised. They never give up so easily. Never. As I watched him walk away, with his excellent posture, steady gait and clothes that, while sloppy, looked a little too clean, it occurred to me he was a fake panhandler, a/k/a a cop. It's not mentioned in this article, but I'm sure I read recently they're going to start arresting people who give the money.

I struggle with the panhandler issue. Am I helping when I give money, or making the problem worse by enabling some self-destructive habit? Right now I make case-by-case judgments, but whether I give or not, I'm almost never certain that I did the right thing.

I struggle with it, too, Dave. I do think once you give, it's best not to think about what they're really going to do with it. See also, Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Hebrews 13:2.

A very good point to have in mind, Marie. On the other hand, how many angels do you suppose work the same freeway off-ramp for three or four weeks in a row?
