* For anyone who still needs to be disabused of the notion that congress is in Washington working for the people: Eight Corporate Subsidies in the Fiscal Cliff Bill, From Goldman Sachs to Disney to NASCAR.
* This sounds like a letter to the editor, but it's not:
... I am troubled by the cynical immorality of my country. I do not think it can survive on this basis and unless some kind of catastrophe strikes us, we are lost. But by our very attitudes we are drawing catastrophe to ourselves. What we have beaten in nature, we cannot conquer in ourselves.
It's part of a letter John Steinbeck wrote to his friend, Adlai Stevenson, in 1959. A timeless lament.
