Dearly beloved

Today's sunrise. The wind is out of the south.

* My niece.

* Illinois coal production on increase, bucking national trend. The most surprising thing I learned in this article is that Illinois is the only coal state that does not tax coal sold out of state (page 3):

“Other coal-producing states impose a severance tax on their natural resources,” said Schroeder, a member of Citizens Against Longwall Mining in Hillsboro. “We’re broke, and the state is losing a lot of money for every ton of coal that leaves its borders.”

I had no idea. That may have a lot to do with the booming coal industry here. But is it good for the state to let these tax dollars slip through our hands? In any event, all the people who are constantly hacking on Illinois for "taxing anything and everything" need to take a step back and acknowledge this.

* Found in the comments to that article: Sinking the Heartland (10 minute video) about longwall mining.

* Official presidential portrait of Barack Obama. Yes, there is a back story. Love it!

Photo of today in Washington, D.C., sent to me by my son-in-law, who is there for the inauguration. But, not for the festivities. He's on the job. Love that picture. Thanks!

* We are gathered here today 2 get through this thing called life. Sorry, no video, because... well, you know. Prince.

* Added. I almost forgot: Photo of the day!!!
