Her zipper's broken down the back

Does it hurt?

* Forty years ago today I started my first job as a legal secretary. I had no idea it would last this long (the job, not that job). I don't know what I thought I was doing. I really wanted to go to college and work in the biologic sciences, but that was not to be.

I've had some great bosses and some not so great bosses. My first boss said on my first day, "I trust you until I can't trust you." I have always tried to live by that.

I had another boss who was a great thinker. He would call me into his office for lengthy dictation sessions, where he would mostly sit there thinking of what to say while twirling his hair. He taught me to think. Really think.

My best boss, the one I worked for the longest, upon delivering a major defeat to a major corporation, called me into his office at 5:00 on a dark, cold winter evening, and said, "I think we're going to be rich!" We? "Of course. If I get rich, you get rich." The corporation had sent tons of their best, thousand dollar an hour lawyers to Central Illinois in an effort to get our client's little case moved to a multi-juriisdiction class action in federal court. There it would be reduced to pennies on the dollar, or worse, get lost forever. My boss, alone, fought back and succeeded in keeping the case in state court. A couple weeks later, at the young age of 48, he died in his sleep.

I had another boss who once said to me, "there's no glory in being a legal secretary." To which I replied, well, I sure as hell ain't doing it for the money.

Who knows when you're a senior in high school what the future holds. I sure didn't. It got me through, though (just barely most of the time).

* Waiting for a factory girl..........
