You drunk my health in scented jasmine tea

* It was many years ago on a cold, rainy morning in January. I was feeling a little sorry for myself, by myself, in the break room at high-powered big city law firm when high-powered former governor senior partner mistakenly wandered in. “Why are you crying, girl!”

Everybody at this high-powered law firm drinks coffee and it enhances their high-poweredness and and I’ll never be high-powered because I can’t swallow that stuff.

“Oh, girl,” he said, his voice softening. “Take my word, don’t go high-powered.”

But the only other drink we have, I said, pointing to the wall of Bunn-O-Matic (no decaf), is Swiss Miss and everyone thinks me a rube and a hick.

“You need your own drink. A drink of the world. Here, let me show you a drink I learned in the war.”

With his one good hand, he set about rummaging through the break room cabinets until he found a forgotten tea bag scrunched up in the corner amongst the ketchup and sundry other accumulating packets. He also found a packet of pepper, a shaker of cinnamon, and a few other things. He then magically produced some linty cloves from his suit pocket. Using his solid gold Montblanc with the state seal, he stirred it all together with scalding hot water in a mug and topped it off with a short squirt of honey and a generous splash of milk.

“Try this,” he said.

I took my first sip. My eyes rolled to the back of my head, I slid off my chair onto the floor, and waded into the undertow of total mellowness -- a state of being which can only be bested by a slow morphine drip.

And I’ve been a chai drinker ever since.

(That may not be precisely how it happened, but it’ll do.)

* Inspired by Mumbai slum dweller's chai, Oprah Winfrey launches swish tea.

* I tried it, and didn’t particularly care for it. But, hey, not even Oprah could top chai made with cloves from the pockets of ex-governors.

* But you knifed me in my dirty filthy basement....
