I hope you have a lot of nice things to wear

A few weeks ago, I was reading my book near the pond a couple blocks from my neighborhood when I felt like I was being watched. Without moving a muscle, I turned my vision to the side and saw this little furry face craning its neck to get a look at me. At first, I thought it might be a rabbit. When I turned my head to get a better look, it did a quick about-face and dove into the weeds. It was so fast, but I was pretty sure it wasn't a rabbit. I wondered if it might be a prairie dog or even a beaver. Hey, I'm a city girl. I don't really know what these things look like.

Then last night I was driving in the same area when a very large gaggle of very large geese decided to walk across the road right in front of me. After the geese passed, but before I could hit the gas, a beaver scampered (waddled, sauntered; what do beaver do?) across the road about 15 feet in front of my car. Wow, it really is a beaver, I thought. How cool. A beaver right here in the city.

Then this afternoon, I'm sorry to report, the beaver was dead in the road. It had obviously been hit by a car. I tried to imagine how fast someone was driving to be unable to brake the car for the little thing. I was so sad. I am still sad. Why.....

* But then a lot of nice things turn bad out there...
