* Regarding Dennis Hastert, former Republican Congressman from Illinois and the longest serving Speaker of the U.S. House, now charged with federal crimes, including structuring and lying to the FBI: He betrayed the trust of a lot of people, including his wife and children, every volunteer of every election he ran in, ever contributor, every citizen of Illinois, and most of all the students he molested (allegedly). Everything good he did has been wiped out as if it never happened.

* Key charge against Hastert a rare one in Chicago's federal court:

Hastert made 15 withdrawals of $50,000 apiece over nearly two years but then allegedly began illegally structuring the withdrawals in increments of less than $10,000 to avoid federal reporting requirements after bank representatives questioned him about the large withdrawals in April 2012.

* Report: Two alleged Hastert victims interviewed by feds.

* No Joy In Yorkville-Hastert’s Secret Is Out:

But Yorkville’s secret, surely known by a few but mentioned by no one over the years, is slowly starting to leak out: Hastert's money allegedly bought a victim's silence—a victim he met as a teacher well before he was third in line for the presidency.
There are an impossible number of names that comprise the possible victim pool—anywhere from 10 to 20 wrestlers for every year from 1965 to 1981, Hastert's tenure at Yorkville High School. On Friday, at least a dozen reporters perused the Yorkville Library’s collection of high school yearbooks, looking for clues to what began as suspicions on Thursday night only to turn into leaks just shy of official confirmation by Friday afternoon.

According to the indictment, he entered into the agreement to pay hush money in 2010, more than two years after he left congress. But, according to reports, the alleged sexual misconduct with someone he has known all the person's life took place when Hastert was a teacher and wrestling coach at the high school, some 30 years prior.

If I was a reporter looking for the payee, I'd focus my research on staffers he might have brought on from his teaching and coaching days, if any. I'd focus my research on legislation he got passed that may have benefited someone who was a student when he was a teacher and coach.

I don't think the paying of hush money started in 2010 -- just the cash part. Someone may have been pulling Hastert's strings for a lot longer than that. Thirty years is a long time to sit on a secret.
