Something or someone's abandoned home. Springfield, Illinois. This is the only nest I've ever seen like this. It just appeared one day several years ago when no one was looking. There was no sound, and no comings or goings.

We don't know what animal or bird built it. It's definitely not a squirrel's nest. At least, not the kind of flimsy, leafy, messy squirrel's nests we see around here.

This is made of tightly woven pine twigs that came off the tree it's built in. At about 12 to 16 inches across, it's what I would consider a large nest. The first year it was still very green with fresh pine needles. Even for a couple years after that, after it turned brown, it was very thick and solid. Until this year, with all the tornadoes and high winds two weeks ago, it's held up quite well. Now, it's starting to look like a shack. I wanted to get a picture of it before it falls apart or comes down.

Do you think it would be an abandoned hawk or falcon nest? Do owls always nest in holes in trees? Send the picture to Henson Robinson zoo; maybe someone there would know and let us know.

Indie D, I'd love it if it was a hawk or falcon. We do have owls that come through here. I may try to contact someone at the zoo. Thanks for the comment.
